TRAIN SEA

SHANKARA RAMA SUBRAMANIAN.

My daughter
Sees the train for the
First time.
I too share the
Amazement
She feels
As the train goes past us.
Train is not just a vehicle
With coaches and wheels
That moves on joining all our stations,
She feels too.
Even if it journeys through
Towns
Villages
Mountains
Water-brimming tanks and
People,
Is train an old oracle
From the cellar.
During festivals
And ceremonies meant for
Prosperity in life
First journey by train began
With the auspicious
Playing of Nadhaswaram.
The leftovers of auspicious music
Still remains in the rattling of the train.
The domesticated animals
Which have emaciated at the handling of human,
Gone awry of hunting
And have started returning to home
Look up with astonishment
And go on with their grazing.
Train hurries up with great ruefulness
At its inability to derail.
Some faces are unconquerable
Some are ever unsurpassable.
Death and dissimilarity are inseparable rails.
I cannot tell my daughter
The whole of the talking of seas
Frozen within the sea and
What the sea - train tells through its rattling, in the darkness.

*
My daughter says
Seeing the engine that
Moves alone
Leaving the coaches at station
That the train goes to sleep.
We need to return to home too.
